Rohan Upgrade Polo - Classic – with a technical twist.

When you’re travelling, there always seem to be plenty of occasions when a T-shirt is rather too relaxed - but a regular shirt would feel a touch stuffy. And, if you’re travelling light and plan to minimise the amount of clothing you carry, the problem only gets worse.

Rohan's Upgrade Polo, though, provides the perfect solution.

It’s the ideal choice for that huge, social ‘middle ground’ between the beach - and the famous ‘ambassador’s reception’.

It takes advantage of an amazing, unique fabric which is an inspired fusion of luxury natural fibres and advanced modern synthetics.

The outer surface is a pique-knitted, top-grade Pima cotton. Pima cotton is a long staple fibre and one of the very best qualities of cotton. It’s generally specified on the most luxurious polo shirts. For us, it was the natural choice.

Rohan Polo Plus- The classic polo shirt. Now available with added Rohan.

The polo shirt is a real classic and a mainstay of many travellers’ wardrobes. And it’s no surprise. The polo shirt is that bit smarter than a T-shirt and more versatile. For example, there’s plenty of eating and drinking places where you’ll feel fine in a polo – but a bit below par in a scruffy T-shirt. In many ways a polo shirt is more practical too. The collar can be turned up to offer sun protection and some relief from rubbing camera straps - or unbuttoned to provide a bit of extra ventilation.

Rohan thought it might be time to take the classic polo shirt recipe – and add a bit of Rohan to the mixing bowl. What we’ve done is take our knowledge of specialist outdoor performance fabrics and transform the potential of the polo into areas beyond the wildest imaginations of Rene, Ralph or anyone else.

And Rohan's Core T is one of the very best there is. It’s made from a sophisticated modern polyester with Rohan's advanced Dynamic Moisture Control™ finish. It wicks sweat in a flash and dries in front of your eyes. It’s also really hardwearing – we use a very clever construction which alternates lower density fabric with a thicker, stronger knit to maximise breathability without sacrificing strength.

To maintain comfort, we use a (relatively expensive) flat-seam construction – it’s strong but minimises rubbing. Particularly welcome if you’re wearing a rucksack. The design is semi-technical – it’s close-fitting without being skin tight. Arguably, this makes it wick less efficiently than something a speed skater might choose. But, on the flip side, it gives it an understated T-shirt appearance. Meaning you can wear it every day – without looking like a team member on TV’s ‘Hole in the Wall’. On the face of it, it’s a smart, presentable T-shirt that’s perfectly suitable for lunch in a fancy pub. But look below the surface and a rather more ‘high performance’ picture emerges.

It looks and feels just like a top-quality cotton T-shirt. But that’s where the similarity ends. We’ve specified a sophisticated blend of functional modern synthetics which offer all the benefits of cotton – with none of the downsides.

Rohan's fabric is far more durable than cotton. It’s easier to wash and much quicker drying. Just rinse it through in a hotel sink and hang it up overnight. It’ll be ready to go again the next morning – with absolutely no ironing required.

Rohan Travel Jeans - Lighter, more comfortable, faster drying. No-one’s 100% sure who invented jeans. But one things for certain. They never set out to make anything ‘cool’.

They were made out of tent fabric and designed to do one thing: work. Over the years, though, they’ve become rather popular. And, as is happens, they’ve turned out to be kind of cool too. Worn by just about everyone, they look great – pretty much anywhere.

When Rohan set out to make jeans, we knew we had to make them better. The question was: how do you improve the ‘unimprovable’? The answer, though, was fairly simple: smart fabric technology. Regular denim jeans look great. But they’re heavy, uncomfortable, too hot for travel and take an age to dry after washing. Rohan Travel Jeans, by contrast, are made from Travel Denim™, a sophisticated fusion of cotton and advanced modern synthetics. The results are remarkable.

Because our Jeans contain stretchy elastane, they’re just about the only jeans you won’t regret wearing on a long-haul flight. They’re also much lighter than ordinary jeans. If we’ve learnt one thing in the last 30 odd years, it’s the fact that lighter fabrics don’t necessarily mean less durable trousers – it’s just a question of choosing the right, light fabric.

Travel Jeans are also much faster drying than regular jeans. Around a third of the fabric is CoolMax® polyester which means Travel Jeans dry in about two thirds of the usual time. In practical terms, that means overnight. Which means you can travel with only one pair. And that’s quite an advantage.

Rohan Hilltop Jacket - Back, at last. A real walking jacket for real walkers. Rohan's Hilltop Jacket is a top-specification waterproof designed, from the ground up, for real walkers – and no-one else. For those with short memories, it looks a bit different – a bit longer than the average waterproof jacket these days. People who’ve been around a while, though, will probably remember that all waterproofs used to be this sort of length. After all, the longer a jacket is, the more protection it offers your legs.

So, what changed? When did waterproofs start getting shorter?

The answer, rather interestingly, is fashion. We think it probably started with The North Face’s Mountain Jacket introduced in 1985. It was really short. But it was short for good reasons. It was designed to be worn with high-fit salopettes for alpine climbing. The bibs offered the protection round the middle, the short length stopped the jacket getting in the way of your harness and gear. It was a great jacket and a big seller. Lots of people, though, decided that they liked the looks of this highly specialist jacket and bought one for all sorts of outdoor and leisure uses. Uses that, to be honest, it wasn’t really suitable for. Manufacturers understandably followed this demand – and jackets got shorter.

Rohan customers, though, tend to know their own mind. They know want they need. And they’re not that easily swayed by the vagaries of fashion. Which is probably why Rohan's Hilltop Jacket has been such a great seller. It’s totally waterproof and highly breathable. It’s made from Rohan's very own, bespoke 2-layer Barricade™ fabric with Rohan's highly-effective Permanent Water Repellency™ finish. Barricade™ is a bit different from ordinary waterproof/breathables. It operates dynamically and responds to your body temperature and the humidity of the surrounding environment. We call it Active Diffusion™. Basically, the steamier it gets inside, the more vapour escapes – keeping you comfortable in a much wider range of conditions.

The Hilltop features deep, zipped hand pockets, a zipped internal pocket and a big map pocket. It’s just where it should be – under the storm flap but outside the main zip. And, as you’d expect, it swallows up the Guild of Pocket Designers’ number one worst nightmare – the British Ordnance Survey map.

The stiffened hood offers complete protection in a proper down-pour and cinches, without fuss, with Rohan's neat One-Pull™ adjustment system. Fleece facings on the inside of the hood offer a bit of extra insulation for your ears. The waist adjusts with a draw-cord hidden inside the hand-pockets – which means you can get the perfect fit and fine-tune the ventilation on the go.

Rohan Pinnacle Jacket - Everything we know so far. Designed for cold-weather trekking, ski touring and winter mountaineering, our Pinnacle Jacket sets a new benchmark for Rohan waterproofs.

Intended to be a hardwearing, durable, workhorse jacket for serious outdoor enthusiasts and mountain professionals, the design of the Pinnacle Jacket is based on 30 years of cumulative knowledge and takes advantage of all the very latest innovations in fabric technology and garment construction.

It’s made from our class-leading Barricade™ fabric with our highly effective Permanent Water Repellency™ finish. Barricade™ works a bit differently from ordinary waterproof/breathables. It operates dynamically and responds to your body temperature and the humidity of the surrounding environment. We call it Active Diffusion™. Basically, the steamier it gets inside, the more vapour escapes – keeping you comfortable in a much wider range of conditions.

The Permanent Water Repellency™ finish is not quite as glamorous – but it’s just as important. It forces water to bead up on the surface of the fabric rather than soaking into the jacket. Without it, breathability would be seriously impaired and, in cold conditions, the jacket would freeze up, becoming stiff, heavy and uncomfortable.

The Pinnacle Jacket features two big chest pockets, mounted high to avoid a rucksack hip-belt, and a full-length waterproof zip. The Riri Aquazip™ is probably the best zip in the world right now for serious outdoor use. It uses moulded plastic teeth which mesh and form a seal. It eliminates the need for a complex system of protective storm-flaps behind and in front of the zips. It’s also really hardwearing and super-tough. Although not cheap, we think the benefits far outweigh the cost.

The hood is stiffened and offers full protection in the worst weather. It adjusts with our neat One-Pull™ adjustment system and offers fleece facings on the inside to keep your ears warm. We’ve gone for a fairly compact hood – it’s the perfect size to go over winter hats or a balaclava but it’s not big enough to go over the top of a skiing or climbing helmet. So bear that in mind, if it’s an important consideration for you.

Two internal stretchy mesh pockets are designed to carry small items as conveniently as possible. They also make a great place to dry off inner gloves.

The sleeve features a small, zipped accessory pocket. It’s big enough to take a compass but it’s also a great place to keep lip salve or a pocket knife.

The ventilation system on the Pinnacle Jacket is a bit different from the more commonly used ‘pit zip’ system - in that it actually works! Our ventilation zips are mounted on the chest so, when you open them, they stay open and work immediately, dumping heat in seconds. The zips are two-way so you can fine-tune the ventilation.

We’ve also added internal link zips – which mean a compatible liner such as the Inner Flame Jacket can be attached. For skiing and general winter use, when you’re almost always putting on and removing both layers at once, this makes the whole arrangement more convenient.

The jacket features a neat, detachable spindrift collar. Take it off for trekking and zip it on when you’re skiing or snowboarding. It features a grippy elastic facing which keeps it exactly where it should be.

Rohan Assignment Vest - The rucksack you wear.

Designed with the travelling professional in mind, the Assignment Vest could best be described as a rucksack – you wear.

When you see it, the first thing you notice is the storage options - it’s got no fewer than ten pockets. Basically, if you can’t find a place for something in our Assignment Vest, you probably don’t need it anyway.

On the outside, there are four cargo pockets, all closed with our secure Rollover™ flaps. There’s also a large, zipped pocket on the outside which allows easy access to items that you need frequently – but don’t want to lose. Two zipped hand pockets complete the external storage options.

On the inside, you’ll find a second vertical zipped pocket, a hook-and-loop fastened chest pocket and a large, zipped pocket below the waist which is large enough to store a guidebook or reporter’s notebook. And, given that there’s no point having a notebook if you’ve lost your pen, you’ll find two pen slots – located at the chest for easy access.

The second thing you notice is the weight. It looks and feels like it’s made from a rugged and pretty heavyweight cotton canvas.

But, pick it up and a whole new picture emerges. It’s far, far lighter than you think it’s going to be. The secret is the fabric: it’s made from polypropylene with a hollow, air-filled core.

In fact, the Vest is made more of air than anything else. Which makes it feel cool in the heat of the day and nice and warm when it’s chilly. It’s also really tough, highly wind resistant, extremely breathable and very quick drying.

The whole vest is lined with a top-quality mesh for high breathability, reduced weight and minimum bulk. It’s the perfect choice for outdoor photographers, journalists, fishermen, or naturalists. Rohan Henley Plus Long Sleeve - The classic Henley. Now with added Rohan. On the face of it, our Henley Plus looks and feels like a classic cotton Henley top. It’s relaxed, comfortable and really versatile – it can be worn alone or layered over a T-shirt or under a pullover. And the deep, buttoned front placket offers the option to increase ventilation when the heat is on.

But that’s where the similarities end. Because our Henley Plus is made from a sophisticated blend of modern synthetics – rather than everyday cotton - its performance is in a completely different league. Our fabric is far, far more durable than cotton, It’s easier to wash and much quicker drying. Just rinse it through in a hotel sink. It’ll be ready to go again the next morning – with absolutely no ironing required.

We’ve treated the Henley Plus with our highly-effective Dynamic Moisture Control™ finish so, for hillwalking and other active uses, the Henley Plus wicks moisture in a flash and dries so quickly that you never get that clammy ‘chilling’ feeling when you stop for a break. In fact, it works just like a technical base layer – it just doesn’t look like one.

Worn alone in warmer weather, the Henley Plus is just as effective. The fabric offers total protection from the harmful effects of UV radiation but features a sophisticated knit structure to allow a cooling airflow when the temperatures really start to rise. The design is pretty classic. It features a neat, three-button placket with deep cuffs and hem. The shoulder seams are slightly displaced to eliminate any uncomfortable rubbing from travel bags or rucksack straps.

Rohan High Ground Hoody - Finally. A hoody worth hugging. These days, when you hear the word ‘hoody’, your first thought tends to be ‘bring back National Service’. Which, is shame, because these negative associations cloud the fact that the maligned hoody is an amazingly practical item of clothing – suitable for all sorts of travel and outdoor uses.

It’s easy to understate how great it feels to flip up the hood for that extra bit of warmth when things turn unexpectedly chilly. You might be waiting for your connection at Clapham Junction, striding along Stanage Edge when the wind suddenly whips up, or walking the dog on a frosty morning. Who knows? But if you haven’t packed a hat, you're going to get a cold head.

Which is exactly where our new High Ground Hoody comes in. It looks and feels just like a cosy cotton jersey hoody. But, as you’d expect with Rohan, the performance is in a different league. The fabric is an ultra-fine guage knitted polyester with a soft, peached finish on the outside and a warm, fleecy inner. The two finishes work as a double act: the outer offers good wind resistance – the inner provides the insulation.

Features include a deep, fixed hood which is adjusted with thick cords – the cords are bar-tacked in place so they won’t come adrift in the washing machine. Two zipped hand pockets are designed to store valuables or simply keep your hands warm. The full length zip provides extra ventilation when required and makes it easy to throw on or remove – with the minimum of fuss.

Just like a regular fleece, the High Ground Hoody is simplicity itself to care for. Just throw it in the machine and hang it out to dry. It’ll comfortably dry overnight and, obviously, it doesn’t need any ironing. In use, it’s high wicking and dries in a flash. Despite looking like an ordinary lightweight fleece this simple and versatile 100 weight fleece is fully reversible and supercharged with a windproof, breathable liner. The really clever bit is that it works well as an outer layer, stopping the wind from robbing you of precious body heat yet because it is so breathable it can work as part of a layering system. Its pocketless design also means that it will not bulk-up when worn under a waterproof. The added bonus is that it is reversible. Wearing it liner side out keeps more heat in, giving extra temperature control.

Rohan's new Microrib Stowaway V-neck, is an incredibly versatile top suitable for a wide range of outdoor and travel uses. By day, it’s a functional layering piece – in the evening, a relaxed, cosy pull-on. It’s made from our advanced Microrib fleece which takes advantage of sophisticated ‘needle-out’ knitting techniques to create a rib pattern on the surface of the fabric. These ribs give the pullover an attractive textured appearance but they also bring with them a host of technical advantages.

They make the whole top lighter. They also make it considerably more breathable, much quicker drying and far more packable. All for the same warmth as a much heavier ‘ordinary’ fleece. The construction also gives it a certain amount of natural stretch which offers unrestricted freedom of movement and a comfortable, easy fit. And we also know that it doesn’t always occur naturally – particularly in the hills and mountains of temperate Britain! The key to keeping warm is trapping dry air – and that’s where our Microgrid Stowaway Top comes in.*

It’s full of holes which trap lots and lots of air. We specify a very advanced, high-quality polyester fleece which is characterised by a hard-wearing ‘holey’ grid design. And these holes have lots of other benefits: they make the whole top lighter. They also make it much more packable and far more breathable. All for the same warmth as a much heavier ‘ordinary’ fleece.

Our Microgrid Top is a super-functional fleece designed to maximise the properties of this remarkable fabric. It’s a simple, technical design which is perfect as a winter layering piece. Team it up with our Core T, our Mountain Pass Jacket and maybe an insulating duvet for the coldest days and you’re ready for anything the British hills can throw at you.

Unfortunately, boxers tend to be made of cotton. In average conditions, that’s fine but, when the heat is on, something more functional is required. Which is where Rohan Clever Boxers come in. Rohan Globetrotter Mac - If you spent £200 on a mac, what’s the least you’d expect? If you’re anything like us, you’d probably say “Well, it’s got to be waterproof.”

Yet, if you spent that sort of money on a mac from the high street, you might well be disappointed. It would probably look smart, it would probably protect your clothes from dust and the odd splash on the way to work - and it would almost certainly have a very fancy checked lining.

But it’s unlikely to be waterproof. Properly waterproof. Water resistant maybe. But, if you’ve ever lived in Manchester, the term ‘water resistant’ has the sort of unnerving connotations that make you think: “I’d better take my brolly”.

It’s totally waterproof and phenomenally breathable.
